New Research at EGU

Posted by Jim Stagge on April 15, 2016

Several pieces of my research will be on display at this year’s European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend in person becuase of scheduling issues. But, please stop by the talks and posters that I am involved with and message me if you have any questions.

Drought Trends and Climate Change

My primary work will be on display at the afternoon poster session on Tuesday the 19th. This poster shows recent trends in meteorological drought for Europe. These trends indicate that drought in Europe is being affected by climate change in an observable and predictable manner:

Stagge, J.H., Kingston, D., Tallaksen, L.M., Hannah, D. (2016) "Diverging trends between meteorological drought indices (SPI and SPEI) in Europe" European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, Session HS2.1.5, 19 April 2016.

This work is being readied to be submitted for publication.

Other Talks

I have also had a hand in several talks this year that range from discussing this year’s European dought:

Ionita, M., Tallaksen, L.M., Kingston, D., Stagge, J.H. (2016). "The European 2015 drought from a climatological perspective" European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, 19 April 2016.

to links and evidence pointing towards feedback in snow cover and temperature:

Rizzi, J., Brox Nilsen, I., Stagge, J.H., Gisnås, K., Tallaksen, L.M. (2016). "Interaction between temperature, precipitation and snow cover trends in Norway" European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, Session HS2.2.1, 20 April 2016.

to a new statistical method to determine whether observed climate changes can be entirely attributed to changes in atmospheric circulation (i.e. more frequent warm circulation patterns), or whether other factors (such as generalized warming or land-atmosphere feedback) play a significant role:

Brox Nilsen, I., Stagge, J.H., Tallaksen, L.M. (2016) "A probabilistic approach to attribute warming to changes in atmospheric circulation" European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, Vienna, Austria, Session HS2.10, 22 April 2016.
