New Research at AGU

Posted by Jim Stagge on October 01, 2016

I will be presenting my newest work in paleohydrology at this year’s American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. In addition, I am a co-author for an invited talk by David Hannah from the University of Birmingham. I look forward to sharing my work, meeting new people, and catching up with old friends this fall.

Reconstructing monthly paleosteamflow from tree-rings

My primary work will be on display at the afternoon (1:40-6:00 pm) poster session on Monday the 12th. This poster shows a new method of reconstructing monthly streamflows directly from tree-ring chronologies and other reconstructed proxies. Reconstructing monthly, rather than annual, flows over multiple centuries is key for understanding natural (pre-industrial) variability in seasonal extremes, like drought. Also, monthly flow reconstructions can be used in water systems models that operate at the monthly scale to determine potential water vulnerability. An example is presented that reconstructs monthly flows at two sites in northern Utah over the past 600 years

This work is being readied for submission and I look forward to discussing it more in person. Please stop by my poster on Monday afternoon.

Other Talks

I have also had a hand in David Hannah’s invited talk to the Large-Scale Climate Variability session (H41I) on Thursday morning (8-8:15 am). This talk will be a summary of our work linking flow variability to atmospheric drivers in Europe and will propose future research directions in this field:
